Addressing the engineering talent shortage is critical for the future of our industry. At Acorn we see this arising challenge as new opportunity to innovate. Research indicates that by 2030, approximately 1 in 3 engineering positions will remain unfilled. Resulting in a significant shortage of around 1 million engineers in the industry. In the UK, this skills gap is currently costing the nation £1.5 billion each year.
Recognising the challenge
The engineering industry faces a critical talent shortage, driven by several key factors:
-
-
- Workforce Aging: Most of the highly experienced engineers are close to retirement, this initially causes a gap in expertise leaving the industry.
- Technology changes: With upcoming advances such as AI and automation in engineering jobs, this new technology introduced can only be tackled by niche skills.
- Adapted Workforce Expectations: Due to workplace culture changes in place especially after COVID-19 pandemic flexible working arrangements are more commonly required ranking up to similar level of importance as competitive salaries.

Engaging the Next Generation
Data reveals that a significant portion of Gen Z (30%) are hesitant to pursue engineering careers, with 34% perceiving the field as male dominated. This generation prioritises purpose, growth opportunities, and flexibility in their careers. To attract and retain young talent, the industry must foster a culture of continuous learning and provide ample opportunities for professional development. When joining an engineering industry most engineers require involvement with constant learning to help contribute to their skill sets to match the evolving industry. Therefore, it is essential that companies invest in additional training opportunities and certificates to motivate engineers to meet the industry needs and progress themselves to achieve more.
